A 28-member delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said Azerbaijan’s Nov. 1 parliamentary election was "generally in line” with international standards.

"It’s the consensus of the mission that election day was calm and peaceful across the country,” Jordi Xucla, the head of the delegation, told reporters Monday in Baku. The voting process was observed to be adequate and generally in line with international standards. Voters had full and unimpeded access to polling stations and there were no incidents reported by the observers.”

The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) won the election by a landslide, getting 70 of 125 seats in parliament, according to preliminary results published by the Central Electoral Commission.
Non-partisan candidates got more than 40 seats.

Main opposition parties boycotted the vote, claiming that it wasn’t free or fair.

YAP deputy chairman Ali Ahmadov said the election reflected public trust in the state, thanking President Ilham Aliyev for winning the trust.
