Starsport understands Valdes will join the Belgium outfit on-loan today after United agreed to fund part of his wages.
The Spanish goalkeeper has been desperate to quit Old Trafford following a bust-up with boss Louis Van Gaal.
Valdes has endured a torrid time at United since joining them on a free transfer and been frozen out by Van Gaal.
He is no longer allowed to train with the first-team squad and is behind David De Gea, Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone in the pecking order.
The 34-year-old wanted to remain in the Premier League, but Van Gaal blocked his chances of joining a top flight rival.
Now he has been left with no choice but to join Liege on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Valdes will be a free agent in the summer when his United contract runs down and will look to secure a move back to English football.
He is one of the most decorated keepers of his generation after winning the World Cup and European Championships with Spain and three Champions League titles with Barcelona.
Van Gaal's treatment of him caused tension among United's Spanish contingent, with club bosses working round-the-clock in this transfer window to find him an acceptable move elsewhere.
