And they fear being be left with egg on their face by making a move for the Spanish boss if it’ll end in failure, especially with City involved.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague also claims a deal has already been agreed.
He tweeted: "On Pep and United. It is false they have met in Paris. As a friend just told me, why would United meet the next City manager?
"So not true Pep met United. He has agreed to join City but hasnt signed yet. That'll happen when Bayern-City is not possible in the [Champions League].”
Chelsea are also interested in Guardiola, who is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Reports in French newspaper L’Equipe said Old Trafford chiefs held secret talks with Guardiola about him replacing Louis van Gaal.
It is claimed the club and 45-year-old Guardiola met in Paris last week.
