Organisers pledged to clean up the toxic cocktail before the world’s top sailors and rowers compete.

But huge open sewers are still spilling filth into the city’s Guanabara Bay.

And poisonous waste is also pouring into the water from nearby petro-chemical plants.

Brazilian yachting federation president Marco Aurelio said: "The promise to the population that they would be able to swim in the bay, and that MILLIONS of people would be able to use it for their leisure, has been broken.”

Work was still going on at the Marina da Gloria venue as it was officially unveiled this week ahead of the Games’ opening on August 5.

Last year, a study into water quality in the bay found evidence of human sewage, sparking fears for the health of athletes.

But Rio mayor Eduardo Paes defended the filthy venue.

He said: "We have depolluted to 60% and we have targeted 80%.

"But we organisers will be blamed every time there’s some rubbish.”
