One hundred years later, Dashnaks returned to Karabakh

One hundred years later, Dashnaks returned to Karabakh

For the first time in many decades, the Dashnaktsutyun Party held a congress in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh. The new party leader Armen Rustamyan makes no secret that this congress is a signal for Nikol Pashinyan.

In an interview with EurasiaDaily, Rustamyan noted the growing activity of the negotiation process around the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Like 30 years ago, Nagorno-Karabakh has become a key topic of Armenian politics.

He also denied rumours that Dashnaktsutyun no longer plays any role in Armenian politics, due to the fact that it did not get seats in the parliament.
'In the history of Armenia, there were periods when the Dashnaktsutyun party was even banished from the country, but continued to exist. At one time, after the collapse of the USSR, when the Supreme Council (Parliament) of Armenia was formed, Dashnaktsutyun did not take part in the elections at all and was not represented there. However, some time later, when turbulent political processes began in the country, the political force that came to power began to shy away from its previous promises to unite Karabakh with Armenia, a rather large deputy group formed in the parliament, which was attached to our party. It played a significant role in suppressing the processes deviating the Armenian state from its fundamental goals laid down in the 1990 Declaration of Independence of Armenia,' he said.

Rustamyan also reminded Pashinyan about the fate of the first President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

'Azerbaijan means solving the problem within its territorial integrity. That is, the withdrawal of Armenian troops and the transfer of territories. Well, at least Pashinyan made a statement about the unacceptability for the Armenian side of the formula 'territory for peace.' This position really inspires at least some hope that Armenia will not find itself in a difficult negotiating position. At one time, this formula led to the political suicide of President Levon Ter-Petrosyan. He resigned. Anyone who in the Armenian reality tries to solve the issue in this way will become a political corpse,' he said.
Recall that in 1918-1920, the Dashnaktsutyun armed units were operating in Nagorno-Karabakh and Zangezur. 'Dashnaktsutyun' was also the ruling party in Armenia, but after the entry of the Soviet troops, it went underground and emigrated. In order to achieve their goals, in their history, Dashnaks often resorted to methods of terrorist struggle.
