Khandanyan: EU mission in Armenia may not be needed in case of peace with Baku

Khandanyan: EU mission in Armenia may not be needed in case of peace with Baku

The need for the EU observer mission in Armenia may disappear if a peace treaty is signed with Azerbaijan, said Sargis Khandanyan, head of the Armenian parliamentary committee on foreign relations, reported from Armenian media.

"EU observers are on the territory of Armenia and are monitoring from the Armenian side of the border, so the Armenian side must decide when, for how long and with what personnel the EU observers should be present. When a peace treaty is concluded, the border demarcation process is completed and regional peace comes, it may be logical that there is no need for monitoring, but at the moment such an issue is naturally not being discussed," he noted.

Khandanyan responded that the question is open on what platform or under whose auspices the peace treaty can be signed.

"It is possible that it will be signed in a bilateral format, it is possible that it will be signed in a third partner country, any option is not excluded," he said.
