Iran's Foreign Minister: Assad did not request assistance from Tehran

Iran's Foreign Minister: Assad did not request assistance from Tehran
09.12.2024 13:03
In a recent television interview, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi revealed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has left the country, never sought help from the Iranian side. Reported from Intergax that Araghchi said Iran's presence in Syria was aimed at countering the threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS).

The Iranian minister expressed surprise at the rapid pace of developments in Syria any action. "The speed of events and the inability of the Syrian army to do anything is certainly surprising," Araghchi stated.

He acknowledged that the current situation in Syria would impact Tehran's ties with Damascus, with whom it had formed the so-called "Axis of Resistance" – an alliance aimed at opposing Israel. "Naturally, the resistance front will suffer," he said. However, the foreign minister believed that despite certain limitations, the resistance would continue.
