Peskov: Armenia cannot be both in EU and EAEU simultaneously

Peskov: Armenia cannot be both in EU and EAEU simultaneously

Armenia's possible accession to the European Union is its sovereign right, but being a member of two different international organizations is impossible, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists while responding to a question about Moscow's position on Armenia's prospects for EU membership, reported from Russian media.

Peskov noted that the EU independently initiates membership processes, so it's necessary to wait for Brussels' reaction to Armenia's initiative.

"What does this membership (of Armenia) in the EU mean? It's difficult to say now because, hypothetically speaking, being a member of two different organizations is impossible," he said, noting that Armenia benefits from membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

According to him, the benefit is measured in percentages and increased growth rates. Additionally, the working mechanisms and integration formats agreed within the EAEU "continue to work for the benefit of the peoples and countries participating in them."

Today, the Armenian government approved a draft law to launch the process of the country's accession to the EU. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that a nationwide referendum needs to be held on this issue.
