EU eyes more gas from Azerbaijan

The European Union (EU) has expressed interest in expanding its imports of gas from Azerbaijan, EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen at a press conference in Baku.

"We are grateful to Azerbaijan not only for the gas that has been imported over the past years—which has been crucial in reducing our dependence on Russian gas—but we also look forward to continuing this cooperation. Moreover, we are very interested in expanding it, as 13% of our gas still comes from Russia, and our goal is to completely stop its imports," Jørgensen noted.

According to him, despite the active promotion of the "green transition" and the development of renewable energy sources, gas will remain part of the EU's energy balance for some time.

"I am confident that if Azerbaijan can increase its supply volumes, Europe will show strong interest in them. One of the reasons for my visit is to discuss what we can do to make this possible. This will undoubtedly be a subject of further negotiations between the European Commission and the Azerbaijani government, as well as individual EU member states, gas companies, transmission system operators, and other stakeholders," the commissioner added.
