Maduro offers U.S. access to Venezuela’s oil, but Washington demands immediate resignation

U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized a new round of informal talks with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, during which expanded U.S. access to Venezuela’s oil resources is being discussed, The New York Times reported, citing officials.

According to the report, Maduro told intermediaries he is ready to grant American energy companies access to Venezuela’s oil fields. The White House, however, is demanding his immediate resignation.

NYT writes that Trump has also approved additional pressure tools, including CIA plans for potential covert operations as part of preparations for a larger military campaign.

According to sources, the U.S. is weighing two options: a negotiated exit for Maduro with safe passage guarantees, or removing him by force.

The Atlantic previously reported that Maduro is willing to step down in exchange for amnesty and safe relocation. Politico says possible destinations discussed include Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan and Cuba.
