Trump gave Maduro one week to leave Venezuela

US President Donald Trump demanded during a 21 November phone call that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro leave the country within a week, four sources familiar with the conversation told Reuters.

According to the sources, Trump offered Maduro the freedom to choose a destination country and assured safety for him and his family. The deadline set by the US president expired on 28 November, after which Trump announced that US airspace would be closed to Venezuelan aircraft.

Reuters reports that Maduro said he would agree to depart only if granted full legal amnesty for himself and his inner circle — including the lifting of all US sanctions and the halting of the International Criminal Court’s investigation against him.

The call lasted under 15 minutes. Sources say Maduro also demanded the removal of sanctions on more than 100 Venezuelan officials accused by the US of human rights abuses, corruption and drug trafficking, and insisted that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez lead a transitional government. Trump rejected several of these requests.

Trump confirmed that the conversation took place but declined to provide details. Three sources told Reuters that Caracas has requested another call with the US president.
