Simonyan says new Armenia–Azerbaijan border demarcation may take place in the first quarter of 2026

Armenia and Azerbaijan may demarcate another section of their border in the first quarter of 2026, Armenian parliament speaker Alen Simonyan said during a briefing.

“In some issues we are in a hurry, in some issues the Azerbaijani side is as well. But the process continues, and I believe we will demarcate another part of the border in the near future,” he said, without specifying the location.

Simonyan said Armenia must create conditions for the transit of Azerbaijani goods through its territory to Nakhchivan and Turkey. Talks with Baku on this issue are ongoing, and such transit could become possible “in the near future,” he noted.

He added that Armenia is ready for trade and economic cooperation with Azerbaijan, including potential imports of oil products, as “the more alternative energy sources Armenia has, the better.”

Simonyan said he was not ready to comment on Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry’s reaction to the “Armenia–EU” document, adding that an official statement would follow later.

He also said the document should not hinder progress on a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. “There is a positive attitude from both Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he said, while noting that it is too early to name a date for signing.
