Azerbaijan expects full repeal of U.S. Section 907 — Bayramov
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said one of the key outcomes of the August 8 summit in Washington was the signing of a document related to Section 907 of the U.S. Freedom Support Act.
“Section 907 was originally adopted against Azerbaijan without any real justification and represented a clear injustice. In light of new regional and geopolitical realities, maintaining this amendment is illogical,” Bayramov said.
He noted that due to the United States’ complex and multi-layered legal system, concrete legislative steps are required to repeal the provision. Several initiatives have already been put forward in the U.S. Congress, including by lawmakers representing Texas and Florida.
“There are currently legislative initiatives in Congress under the international relations category. The full repeal of Section 907 would reflect the current state of Azerbaijan–U.S. relations and take into account the significant changes taking place in the region,” the foreign minister said.
Bayramov added that while similar initiatives had been proposed in the past, the current political environment is far more conducive to their success.
“Our expectation is that Section 907 will be fully repealed by the U.S. Congress,” he said.
