France to summon U.S. ambassador after comments on activist’s death
The French government is preparing to summon U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner to the Foreign Ministry in protest over statements by the administration of Donald Trump regarding the death of a far-right activist, French Foreign Minister Jan-Noel Barron said.
The remarks came after a post by the U.S. State Department Bureau of Counterterrorism on X.
Far-right activist Quentin Derank died last week from severe brain injuries sustained after being beaten during clashes in Lyon. The incident has heightened political tensions ahead of upcoming elections, while Emmanuel Macron has called for calm.
Barron said France rejects what he described as “political speculation” surrounding the tragedy. The U.S. State Department, meanwhile, warned of rising violent radical leftism and said the incident underscored broader public safety risks.
French officials also plan to raise other issues with Kushner, including U.S. sanctions related to Thierry Breton and Nicolas Guillou, as well as decisions involving the International Criminal Court.
