Azerbaijan clears hundreds of mines, unexploded ordnance in liberated areas
Between Feb. 16 and 22, 2026, Azerbaijan’s Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) detected and neutralized 28 anti-tank mines, 175 anti-personnel mines, and 796 unexploded ordnance (UXO) in territories liberated from occupation. A total of 1,616.5 hectares were cleared of mines during this period.
In 2025, ANAMA cleared 1,861 anti-tank mines, 4,963 anti-personnel mines, and 52,392 UXOs in the Karabakh region, covering 69,205.7 hectares. Over the past four years, a cumulative total of 175,017 mines have been neutralized in liberated areas, including 21,022 anti-tank mines, 34,996 anti-personnel mines, and 118,999 UXOs, across 176,237 hectares.
Globally, 84% of mine victims are civilians, with 37% of them children; overall, 81% of victims are men and boys. In Azerbaijan, mine victims number more than 3,400, including 359 children and 38 women. Since the Second Karabakh War, 382 people have been affected, 55 of whom died, with 143 civilian casualties.
