Absheron to Build $591M Regional Waste Landfill Under Livable Baku
A new regional sanitary landfill and four waste transfer stations are set to be developed in Azerbaijan's Absheron district under the climate-focused Livable Baku initiative. According to World Bank project data, the investment also encompasses a transfer facility and a secondary raw materials recovery plant in Baku's Gala settlement. The complex will serve approximately 695,500 residents across the Khizi, Shamakhi, Gobustan, and Absheron districts, alongside the city of Sumgayit, situated within a 1,500-hectare site.
Prior to groundbreaking, land boundaries and tenancy rights will be assessed alongside full social and environmental safeguards, including targeted livelihood support for informal waste collectors. The total project value stands at $591.25 million, with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) committing $500 million and the Government of Azerbaijan providing the remaining $91.25 million.
