Europe weighs buffer zone in Ukraine as part of peace talks

European officials are discussing the creation of a 40-kilometer buffer zone between Russian and Ukrainian front lines as part of potential conflict settlement scenarios, Politico reported, citing five diplomats.
According to the report, the proposal is among several options under consideration for a ceasefire or post-war arrangement. The United States is not participating in the discussions.
The number of troops to monitor the zone has not yet been determined, with estimates ranging from 4,000 to 60,000. French and British forces are expected to form the core of any such contingent.
