Azerbaijan says two Armenian troops killed in preventive attacks

Two Armenian troops were killed and many more injured in preventive attacks in the past two days, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.

"Our armed forces took preventive and timely measures in various sections of the line of contact on October 1-2 to stop the movement of the enemy,” the ministry said Friday on its website. "Two enemy servicemen were killed and many more injured in strikes carried out by our armed forces.”

Azerbaijan suffered no losses, the ministry said.

Fighting intensified between Azerbaijan and Armenia last month. At least one Azerbaijani and four Armenian troops were killed in clashes last week.

Armenians captured nearly one-fifth of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts, in a war in the early 1990s.

While large-scale hostilities ended with a ceasefire in 1994, no peace agreement has been signed.

Armenia has yet to comply with four UN Security Council resolutions, which were passed in 1993, demanding immediate and unconditional withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory.
