Gone with the wind: Hybrid superyacht

A French design firm has come up with the perfect solution for billionaires who want an ultra-luxurious yacht that has all the bells and whistles but inflicts less harm on the environment.

The 282ft hybrid trimaran called Komorebi – the Japanese word for sunlight filtering through trees – is powered by traditional fuel and wind energy thanks to its unique design.

Designed by VPLP, the superyacht boasts two fully-automated ‘wings’ or sails that can propel it at a speed of 15 knots (17mph) with 20 knots (23mph) of wind – and it even has a tree on the rear deck boost its eco credentials even more.

There is no need to switch on the engine when the superyacht is in hybrid mode, meaning the vessel would burn 30 per cent less fuel on long crossings, said VPLP, a naval architectural firm known for its award-winning racing yachts.

It said: ‘This hybrid trimaran is the perfect answer to comfort at sea, space, stability, low running costs as well as a big step towards a clean wake.

'Despite her length we want Komorebi not to appear dominant and overwhelming - we want a sweet giant who we can all love.'

If the concept yacht ever sails the Mediterranean or Caribbean, guests will benefit from an open layout that has plenty of natural sunlight yet still provides room for private spaces.

VPLP said the vessel would be efficient and stable enough to sail across oceans and agile and shallow-drafted enough to enter tight spaces.

Describing it as a cross between a sailing vessel and a power yacht, Komorebi would have a large swimming pool, spacious lounge, hot tub and plenty of deck space to soak up the sun.

A helipad would be located at the front of the yacht and there would be storage for toys such as personal watercraft or mini-submarines.

Hybrid superyachts are one of the latest trends thanks to new environmental regulations and increasing pressure on the industry.

Last year, the US government announced new rules to curb pollution from superyachts.

Vessels longer than 79ft and weighing more than 500 tonnes that enter US waters have to be fitted with gear that can convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.
