PACE delegates arrive in Azerbaijan ahead of parliamentary elections
A delegation of European lawmakers arrived in Azerbaijan on Monday to oversee preparations for parliamentary elections in November, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) said Monday.
The five-member delegation, led by Spanish lawmaker Jordi Xucla, will "assess the electoral framework and campaign prior to the parliamentary elections," the EU legislature said.
During their two-day visit, PACE delegates will meet the parliament speaker, leaders of parliamentary groups and parties, as well as heads of opposition parties not represented in parliament.
The delegation is expected to issue a statement on the visit at the end of their trip to the country.
Azerbaijan is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections on November 1. Its restrictions on the number of observers have caused controversy, with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe refusing to participate.
