NASA spotted glowing blue lights on this alien world

NASA spotted glowing blue lights on this alien world

The Dawn space probe beamed back its incredible images of the dwarf planet Ceres in August, revealing enigmatic glows on its surface.

Now scientists say they know what the lights are – and the announcement is sure to fuel further talk of alien life.

Because they say the crater contains water, believed to be one of the primary ingredients needed for life.

And the otherworldly glow from the dwarf planet is a haze, created when the sun hits the frozen water.

The find is all the more shocking because Ceres is not typically thought of as a potential home for alien organisms.

But some believe that it once held an underground ocean capable of supporting life.

Others say that microorganisms from the dwarf planet could have even come to earth, after being blasted into space by a massive explosion.

Experts at the Max Planck Society, which has been studying NASA's images, said the frozen water theory supports their belief that Ceres isn't just rock and metal.

"The most plausible interpretation of our results is that there is a mixture of ice and salts under at least some parts of Ceres’ surface," said Dr Andreas Nathues.

"Our results show that subsurface ice was also able to survive in the asteroid belt, which is comparatively close to the Sun."

Sat between Mars and Jupiter, Ceres was found to be reflecting light from more than 130 bright spots on its surface.

NASA's Dawn probe has been monitoring the alien world since arriving there in March this year.
