But after making a promise to a family friend on her deathbed, Smithers, now 30, has dropped almost half his body weight and turned his life around.He cut out the fizzy drinks, dozens of sausage rolls and loaf-and-a-half of bread that he used to eat every day – a daily intake of 4,000 calories – after promising friend Maggie Johnson, who was suffering from terminal cancer, that he would shift the weight.“I made a promise, and I stick to my promises,” Smithers said of his vow to Johnson, a friend of his mother who had known him since he was a boy.In swapping computer games for the gym he was able to lose 11 stone – almost half his body weight – in 13 months.“I’d tried to lose weight before, but I’d always been a big lad, and I just struggled with food,” said Smithers, who lives in Orpington, Kent. “I’d be snacking constantly, and forever eating sandwiches.
