Keeping a foreign national in detention for years is unacceptable and creates an extra budget burden, lawmaker Zahid Oruc told the Milli Majlis autumn session on Sept. 30.

“The cost of holding one person in detention is about 7,500 manats a year, and given this financial burden, it would be appropriate to deport foreigners promptly. I believe the deportation method can be used,” he said.

Oruc’s remarks came during a debate on detention practices and migration policy. The lawmaker urged quicker procedures to reduce costs and administrative load.
