Ex-consul general Sultan Gasimov faces trial in Baku over large-scale gold smuggling

The former Consul General of Azerbaijan in Saint Petersburg, Sultan Gasimov, has been indicted on charges of large-scale gold smuggling and inflicting financial damages totaling 200,000 manats on a victim.

The preliminary investigation, conducted by the Anti-Corruption General Directorate under the Prosecutor General, has concluded. Investigators established that actions committed by Gasimov resulted in 200,000 manats in direct material losses, a portion of which was reimbursed during proceedings. The case dossier has been transferred to the Baku Grave Crimes Court, where hearings are scheduled to open shortly.

Gasimov was appointed as Azerbaijan’s first consul general in Yekaterinburg in 2009, serving until 2016. He was subsequently appointed head of the consulate general in Saint Petersburg on May 3, 2016, a post he retained until his formal recall on October 21, 2024.
