Sanremo Institute has trained 30,000 experts in humanitarian law — Giorgio Battisti

Founded in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy, the institute has trained more than 30,000 experts from over 170 countries in international humanitarian and human rights law over the past five decades. The statement came from the President of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, Giorgio Battisti.

He said the institute’s core mission is to promote the principles of international humanitarian law (IHL) and to prepare military and civilian personnel to prevent violations of the laws of war.

“Training and awareness are not merely theoretical — they are essential tools to prevent breaches during armed conflicts,” Battisti said.

He noted that over the years, the Sanremo Institute has cooperated with the UN, UNESCO, NATO and the International Committee of the Red Cross, shaping what has become known as the “Humanitarian Dialogue in the Spirit of Sanremo.” Battisti added that the institute continues to prioritize efforts to determine the fate of missing persons and uphold the right of families to know, calling this both a humanitarian and legal imperative.
