Hundreds of new buses purchased for Baku annually, public transport system to be launched in Karabakh

Between 2,800 and 3,000 buses are currently operating in Baku, and hundreds of new vehicles are purchased each year to replace old ones, said Fuad Jafarli, head of the transport planning department at the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency.

According to him, alongside the renewal of the bus fleet, a public transport plan has also been prepared for the liberated territories:

“The first stage for 2025–2026 is almost complete. A regional public transport system is expected to be launched,” Jafarli said.

He noted that a recent presidential decree will enable the purchase of new buses and the subsidization of public transport. Of the eight cities included in the program, four are in Karabakh — Lachin, Khankendi, Magadan and others.

Jafarli said that 14 new buses will be produced for the region at the beginning of next year, while locally made buses will also be procured. New bus depots are under construction.

He added that accessibility in Lachin remains low, and for this purpose a ropeway project is being developed.

“The project will be used both for tourism and passenger transport,” Jafarli said.
