Lawmaker proposes removing the term “arvad” from legislation
The term “arvad” used in Azerbaijani legislation, including the Family Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in reference to women should be replaced, Azerbaijani lawmaker Bahruz Maharramov said.
According to the lawmaker, terminology evolves alongside language and social relations.
“Today, no woman would want to be addressed using that expression,” Maharramov said.
He noted that in the future it may be appropriate to introduce relevant amendments to legislation, including the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The MP also stressed the importance of a cautious approach in discussions related to gender issues.
Maharramov stated that the role of men and women in Azerbaijani families has traditionally been shaped within the concept of “spouses,” and that the main goal should remain the preservation of the national family institution.
“We must look at the issue through the lens of reality,” the lawmaker added.
