29 Azerbaijani citizens prosecuted for fighting in Syria
29 Azerbaijani citizens who fought with Syrian armed groups have been brought to justice, said a government report on state security submitted to the parliament, APA reports.
The report says that in recent years, Azerbaijani citizens' involvement in religious radical organizations and illegal armed groups abroad make it necessary to take a new approach to the issue and more effective fight against such negative cases and terrorism.
As a result of counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism measures carried out during the reporting year, 29 people who fought in Syria, 2 members of terrorist organizations operating in Pakistan and Afghanistan, 3 more people with radical ideas suspected of being involved in kidnapping and illegal maintenance of firearms, ammunition and explosives, 3 people committed arson in mosque to sow discord among believers and 4 more Azerbaijani citizens involved in illegal sale of religious literature, audio and video materials were brought to justice.
Moreover, three members of the religious radical extremist group, which was specially trained in Syria and equipped with various types of firearms, explosives and military equipment and intended to commit crimes of terrorism, were arrested and the General Prosecutor's Office launched a criminal case against them.
