Marcos Rojo is set to be fined two weeks' wages after the Argentine failed to join up with the Manchester United squad on their pre-season tour of North America.

The defender was due to link up with his team-mates in the United States on Saturday night but was not allowed to board the flight because of passport issues.

Manager Louis Van Gaal was far from happy when the Argentina international missed his scheduled flight to San Jose on Friday after not getting his passport renewed despite having an extended break following the Copa America.

The Argentine was not helped by the fact that compatriot

Angel di Maria also failed to make his scheduled flight to join the team as he closes in on a £46.5million move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Rojo is now set to be £140,000 out of pocket for his error, which left Van Gaal fuming as the club continue their preparations for start of the Premier League season on August 8.

After United's 3-1 win against Barcelona on Saturday the Dutch manager revealed the pair had not arrived as planned.

'I have heard he (Di Maria) was not on the plane,' said Van Gaal. 'I cannot say anything. Marcos Rojo was not on the plane, he had a passport issue but with Di Maria I don't know why.'

Van Gaal had insisted that Di Maria would meet up with the United squad but the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss has already told his players that he will be joining the French champions.

In spite of the pair's absence, United have enjoyed a fine pre-season in the US.

They beat Mexican outfit Club America in Seattle 1-0, after a goal from new signing Morgan Schneiderlin, and then defeated San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 at the Avaya Stadium four days later.

And on Saturday they maintained their 100% record as they beat European champions Barcelona 3-1 at the Levi's Stadium, California.

The Red Devils take on Paris Saint-Germain at Soldier Field, Illinois on Thursday with the intention of going into their first Premier League game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, on August 8, on the hottest streak possible.
