Romanian president cuts short Armenia visit after government no-confidence vote
Romanian President Nicusor Dan cut short his visit to Armenia, where he was attending the European Political Community summit, after parliament passed a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s government.
Romania’s parliament backed the no-confidence motion on May 5, with 281 lawmakers voting in favour, above the 233 votes required to bring down the government.
Dan returned to Bucharest to make a statement on the political situation. He called for calm and said he would seek to form a new pro-Western government.
Reuters reported that Bolojan’s government would remain in office in a caretaker capacity with limited powers until a new cabinet is formed. The political crisis has increased uncertainty over Romania’s economic stability and access to EU funds.
