Azerbaijan’s ex-envoy at Council of Europe wanted for embezzlement

Azerbaijan has issued an arrest warrant for its former ambassador to the Council of Europe, Arif Mammadov, on several charges, including embezzlement and abuse of office.
Mammadov, who lives in Brussels, is accused of embezzling 410,000 manat of public money while serving as ambassador at the Council of Europe, according to a statement by the Prosecutor General’s Office. He denies the charge.
The Prosecutor General’s office said Interpol’s Baku office is "taking the necessary measures” to arrest Mammadov and hand him over to the Azerbaijani authorities.
Mammadov fell out with the government after he criticized the authorities in a Facebook post in May over a Baku apartment building fire that killed 16 people.
