Afghanistan signs $20 million gold mining deal with Azerbaijani company

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has signed a $20.24 million contract with Azerbaijani and Afghan companies to develop the Qala-e-Zal gold mine in the northern province of Kunduz. (amu.tv)

 

The ministry said the five-year agreement was signed with Azerbaijan’s Reef Group LLC and Afghanistan’s Subhan Momand Company. The project covers nearly 6 square kilometres of mining area. 

Under the deal, the companies will pay a 30% royalty to the Afghan authorities and allocate an additional $200,000 for social services and local development projects. 

The ministry said the project is expected to create around 100 direct and indirect jobs. Ambassadors of Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan attended the signing ceremony.
