The Caspian Sea is rapidly shallowing due to global climate change, Amir Aliyev, the head of the Department of Geomorphology of the coasts and bottom of the Caspian Sea of the Institute of Geography named after A. Academician H.Aliyev, Doctor of Geography, Professor, said in an interview with Russia's Rossiya 1 TV channel.

Dozens of kilometers of once the seabed have turned into a dried surface under the scorching sun, Aliyev said.

He stressed that by the end of this century the Caspian Sea could become very shallow, the water level could drop by 9 or even 18 meters.

"This means that the reservoir will lose 34% of its territory. This is a big problem for all countries with access to the sea, and Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan will have to solve it together," he said.
