Europe has pledged to the United States it will end all purchases of Russian gas by Jan. 1, 2027, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC.

“There is growing demand in Europe for the U.S. to complete the replacement of Russian gas. We will increase LNG exports, we will also increase exports of oil and oil products. And ultimately, we will deliver nuclear technologies and new nuclear reactors to Europe,” Wright said.

He added that the United States must play a key role in supplying Europe after the phase-out of Russian imports and would discuss removing barriers to U.S. energy exports in Brussels.

The European Commission earlier outlined a plan to ban Russian oil and gas purchases by end-2027, with restrictions to remain in place even after the war in Ukraine ends. Eurostat data shows Russia accounted for about 15–16% of EU gas import value in the first half of 2025, with countries like Hungary, Greece, Slovakia and Italy still relying on supplies via TurkStream and other routes.
