President Ilham Aliyev warns of Armenian energy crisis post-Metsamor, offers power supplies

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has warned of a severe energy crisis in Armenia following the eventual shutdown of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, stating that Baku stands ready to supply the neighboring country with electricity. Aliyev made the remarks during an interview with Azerbaijan Television in Nakhchivan.

According to the President, Azerbaijani specialists have already conducted preliminary technical assessments within Armenian territory and mapped potential locations for electricity transmission pylons. Expressing hope that Yerevan will not delay addressing the matter, Aliyev reiterated that Metsamor is outdated, poses a regional safety hazard, and cannot have its operational lifespan extended indefinitely.

"The primary source of electricity in Armenia currently remains the nuclear power station, the management of which is not in Armenian hands. If this source is closed, Armenia could face a major energy crisis. Therefore, having an additional source of power supply is unquestionably in Armenia's own interest," the Azerbaijani President noted.
