US Treasury Secretary Bessent warns nations keeping Iran ties risk economic collapse

US Treasury Secretary Bessent warns nations keeping Iran ties risk economic collapse
21.08.2026 11:04

Countries maintaining economic and commercial ties with Iran face severe economic decline, Anews.az reported, citing TASS quoting US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

"Any remaining ties with Tehran will accelerate [any] country's economic decline, regardless of whether those ties are purposely forged or willfully ignored," the Treasury chief wrote in a post on X.

The remarks follow US President Donald Trump's announcement of an unprecedented campaign of "economic war and isolation" targeting Iran. Trump explicitly warned that foreign jurisdictions whose financial institutions, commercial enterprises, airports, or state bodies provide backing to Tehran will face severe US economic countermeasures and penalties.
