Formula 1 to shorten Grand Prix race distance from 2027

Formula 1 will reduce the maximum race distance for Grand Prix events from 305 km to 290 km starting in the 2027 season.

The reduction stems from planned shifts in the power split between internal combustion engines and electric units, moving from the current 53:47 ratio to 58:42 in 2027 and 60:40 in 2028. With chassis-integrated fuel tank sizes fixed, higher fuel consumption raised concerns that some teams would be unable to complete full distances.

The update will also revise disruption protocols. While the standard two-hour racing window remains intact, the overarching three-hour suspension ceiling will be replaced by a flexible "definitive finish time" adapted to daylight and race conditions.

Additionally, new rules will allow extra flexibility to extend free practice sessions interrupted by red flags.
