Europe’s Top Luxury Giants Shed €251B in Market Value Amid Chinese Slump
The aggregate market capitalization of Europe’s six largest luxury goods conglomerates has contracted by €251 billion in 2026, according to the Financial Times. The downturn has been driven primarily by slumping demand for high-end retail across mainland China. The decline impacts publicly traded sector leaders LVMH, Hermès, Kering (owner of Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga), Richemont, Prada, and Moncler.
The heaviest market losses were concentrated in LVMH and Hermès, whose valuations shed €131.6 billion and €93.3 billion, respectively. While Chinese consumers served as the premier growth engine for the luxury industry over the past decade, a prolonged real estate slump alongside equity market stagnation has sharply dampened domestic consumer appetite. Over the past six months, average monthly retail sales growth in China dropped below 0.5%, decelerating substantially compared to 2025 performance.
