Azerbaijan's Azal cuts prices after criticism by president

Azerbaijan Airlines (Azal) reduced prices for a number of flights between 20 percent and 30 percent after criticism of the state-owned company’s price policy by President Ilham Aliyev.

The price cut aiming to boost Azerbaijan's tourism industry will take effect next month, according to a statement on the company website.

A one-way flight from Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport to Istanbul, for instance, will now cost 219 euros, down 21 percent from the previous price of 277 euro. The new price does not include a 25 euro fare for luggage. Up to five kilos of cabinet baggage will be free.

Flights to Ukraine’s Lvov will be 30 percent cheaper – 337 euro vs 478 euro.

The price cut also applies to flights from Baku to Ankara, Moscow, Dubai, Kiev, Rome, Tbilisi, London, Milan, Paris, Tehran and Minsk, among a number of other cities.

The low-cost flights will be carried out by Embraer planes, the company said.
