Iranian drone spies on US aircraft carrier as war tensions heighten in Persian Gulf

The drone is also seen approaching a giant warship from the side and placing its target sights of its hull.

The identity of the vessel is unclear.

But the nuclear-powered USS Harry S Truman is currently in the Gulf region launching warplane attacks against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

A spokesman for the US Navy's 5th Fleet based in Bahrain, Commander Kevin Stephens, said: "We are not in a position to verify the authenticity of the video as there are countless examples of similar footage to be found on the internet."

But it has been confirmed on a seperate occasion an unarmed Iranian drone flew near the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and also "directly over" the USS Harry S Truman.

The Iranian TV report said the drone flight happened on the third day of a naval drill.

The display of fire-power was intended to cover more than one million square miles of the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.

An Iranian light submarine is also said to have taken part in the operation.
