Spain calls for creation of joint EU army

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said Europe should strengthen its sovereignty and create a common European Union army.

He said the EU needed to reduce its security dependence and develop a joint defence capability.

Albares said the idea did not mean abandoning NATO, but Europe should “do more” if the alliance no longer provides the same level of security.
