Plane carrying Khamenei’s body lands in Mashhad

A plane carrying the body of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family landed at Shahid Hasheminejad Airport in Mashhad on the morning of July 9, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported. 

According to IRNA, farewell and funeral ceremonies began on July 3. After ceremonies in Tehran and Qom, processions were also held in Iraq’s Najaf and Karbala on July 8.

The agency said the final funeral ceremony would take place in Mashhad on July 9, with Khamenei to be buried at the Imam Reza shrine.

IRNA said Khamenei and several members of his family were killed on February 28 in a U.S. and Israeli attack on the leadership residence in Tehran.
