President Ilham Aliyev and his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, on Dec. 24 visited the Heydar Mosque under construction in Baku’s Binaqadi district, state news agency Azartac said.
Final touches are being put to the mosque, which will be Azerbaijan’s largest. It will bear the name of former President Heydar Aliyev.
The mosque occupies a 12,000 square-meter area. The interior of the building is 4,500 square meters.
Construction of four 72-meter minarets and two domes, 55-meter and 35-meter high, has been completed.
Baku Mayor Hacibala Abutalibov briefed the president about the design of the mosque. He said decoration work inside the building will be completed soon.
Dec. 24 marks President Aliyev's 53rd birthday.
