Azerbaijan maintains dialogue with state bodies on lawyers’ professional issues
Azerbaijan is continuing institutional dialogue with relevant state bodies to address issues faced by lawyers in their professional activities, Anar Bagirov, chairman of the Azerbaijani Bar Association, said at an international conference in Poland.
He said studying international experience and professional standards contributes to improving national legislation and institutional mechanisms governing the legal profession.
“Lawyers must carry out their professional activities free from any pressure or interference, solely in accordance with the requirements of the law and professional ethics,” Bagirov said.
He said the independence of the legal profession is one of the key safeguards of the rule of law, human rights and a fair trial. Legislative guarantees, professional self-governance and financial independence play an important role in protecting this independence, he added.
Bagirov spoke on “Safeguards for the independence of the legal profession” at a conference marking the 30th anniversary of the Polish National Bar Council’s membership in AEA-EAL and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the European Association of Lawyers.
