Expert: Iran's exit from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to aggravate regional situation

Expert: Iran's exit from Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to aggravate regional situation
24.01.2023 14:00
If Iran withdraws from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the political situation in the region will worsen, military expert David Gendelman said.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian did not rule out the possibility of such a move in response to the European Union's recent decision to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

According to Gendelman, Iran has previously threatened to withdraw from the NPT in response to Europe's undesirable steps.

However, according to the expert, the threat does not mean the exit.

"If this threat comes true, it will bury the negotiations on the nuclear deal, as well as increase the chances of imposing additional sanctions against Iran," Gendelman concluded.

In turn, Koert Debeuf, a senior researcher at the Institute for European Studies at the University of Brussels, an expert on the Middle East, considers Iran's withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons unlikely.

"Iran's threats to withdraw from the Treaty is, in my opinion, something they will never do, as it will ruin the Iranian nuclear deal forever," he said.

The political scientist stressed that it is primarily Iran that needs the treaty.

"So, will it threaten the security of the Caucasus? I don't think so. Will it change the relations between Iran and Israel? No, because these relations cannot get worse," the expert said.
