After having made her mark in the recent shooting events, Panchkula shooter Yashaswini Singh Deswal is on a new high: she is rubbing shoulders with Beijing Olympics gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, London Olympics bronze medallist Gagan Narang and 2013 World Cup gold medallist Heena Sidhu.
They are all part of the 20-member Indian team for the ISSF World Cup to be held in Gabala, Azerbaijan, next month, and they started training at a camp in New Delhi from Monday. "All my hard work over the last few months has paid off, and I am looking forward to this opportunity. I had some good scores this year and the performance in Germany has also helped me a lot. The World Cup sees the best shooters from all over the world and it will be a huge opportunity for me.
Heena Sidhu, who won the gold medal in 2013 World Cup, is also part of the pistol team, and training with a shooter like her will boost my confidence,” said 18-year-old Deswal, who is currently ranked second behind Sidhu in the national rankings. In the recent past, Deswal improved her score in the women’s 10 M Pistol event and claimed the junior title in the National Championships held in Pune in January earlier this year with a new junior national record of 384.
Last month, she led the Indian junior team to a bronze medal in the Junior World Cup held in Suhl, Germany, and she made it to the Indian senior squad for the ISSF World Cup to be held in Gabala, Azerbaijan, next month. It will be her first senior international team appearance.
