German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has congratulated Azerbaijan and Armenia on the signing of the agreement in Washington in August 2025.

According to a Report correspondent from Berlin, Merz was speaking at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

According to Merz, the signing of the agreement in Washington will contribute to the development of the South Caucasus.

"We also need peace, security, and stability in the South Caucasus. It is in the best interest of Germany and the European Union that this geopolitically important region stabilizes," Merz said.

According to him, the agreements between Azerbaijan and Armenia open up opportunities to normalize relations between the countries and overcome the decades-long conflict.

"Stability in the region also opens up new opportunities for expanding economic cooperation between our countries," the German Chancellor added.
