Azeri citizen jailed for fighting in Syria
An Azeri national has been convicted of fighting in Syria as a member of a jihadist group, the APA news agency reported.
The Court of Serious Crimes in Baku sentenced Zohrab Mahmudov to 12 years and six months in jail, the report said. The man was charged with fighting in Syria as a member of the Jaish al-Muhajireenwal -Ansar (Army of Emigrants and Supporters) armed group.
He was injured during several military operations, APA added.
Over 100 Azerbaijani volunteers have been killed in Syria since fighting started in the country, according to Azerbaijani media. Azerbaijani laws prohibit fighting in foreign wars.
