Trump targets foreign-made films with 100% tariff in bid to 'save' Hollywood

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on all films made outside the United States, including those produced by American studios abroad, citing a need to “save Hollywood” from what he described as “rapid decline.”

"Foreign-made films pose both an economic and a national security threat. They’re tools of hostile propaganda," Trump said, instructing federal agencies to implement the new policy immediately.

The move has sparked concern across the entertainment industry. Many high-profile 2025 releases — including Minecraft: The Movie, Mission: Impossible 8, and Jurassic World: Resurrection — were filmed extensively in the UK, Canada, and Italy.

Industry analysts warn the tariffs could disrupt Hollywood’s global production model. Roth Capital Partners estimates that over 75% of Netflix content is produced outside the U.S. Even Trump’s allies in the industry could be affected — Mel Gibson’s upcoming film is slated to shoot in Italy.

Critics say the measure could damage U.S. soft power and raise costs for consumers. The Wall Street Journal noted, “Hollywood exported over $22 billion in content last year — tariffs could cripple the industry and reverse key economic gains.”
