Azerbaijan introduces new national standard for gold alloys

The Azerbaijan Standardization Institute (AZSTAND) has approved a new state standard, AZS ГОСТ 6835:2025, titled “Gold and Alloys Based on It. Grades,” aimed at regulating the composition, quality, and classification of precious metals and gemstones in the country, officials said on Thursday.

According to Rovshan Amircano, chair of the Technical Committee on Standardization for Precious Metals and Gemstones, the new regulation establishes detailed technical requirements for both raw and polished gemstones, enhances transparency in the jewelry production process, and strengthens consumer protection and market competitiveness.

The standard defines the chemical composition and marking rules for gold and its alloys, while also setting procedures for sampling, laboratory testing, and certification of jewelry products. It includes classification norms for diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and alexandrites, based on color, clarity, cut, and size.

Amircano added that terminology and quality assessment methods are now unified under clear guidelines, facilitating better market oversight and access to certified goods for consumers. The standard was developed through consensus among stakeholders and aligns with best international practices.

He also noted that in 2024, Azerbaijan adopted three international jewelry industry standards from Turkey, which cover technological requirements for production, chemical composition of precious metals, and ethical and professional criteria for industry specialists.

Authorities say these initiatives are intended to support the development of Azerbaijan’s precious metals sector in line with global standards and improve its regulatory framework.
